Does Stress Affect Our Skin?

The answer to that question is a big, fat yes. Stress can have a negative effect on our whole body, including our skin.

When we’re stressed, a chemical response in our body occurs and we become much more sensitive and reactive. This often causes us to break out more and have more problems with our skin.

Acne may occur because stress releases Cortisol and other hormones, which encourages the Sebaceous Glands to produce more oil (called Sebum).  This excess oil can cause pores on our face and body to become blocked and irritated. Stress can also exacerbate skin problems such as psoriasis, rosacea and eczema.

If we’re in full-on stress-mode we may be forgetting to hydrate ourselves, meaning we’re not drinking enough water or even substituting water for energy drinks, fizz, coffee or alcohol which encourage acne and dry skin. When it all really hits the fan we may start breathing in short, shallow breaths, which can cause flushing or redness of the face.

Being stressed is horrible and it can be caused by so many things such as exams, work, relationship issues and injuries from sport just to name a few. So to help out, we’ve compiled a wee list of ways to relieve stress and keep your skin looking fresh and flawless:

Next time you’re super stressed:

  1. Don’t neglect your skincare regime! Keeping your skin clean and moisturised is vital in combatting the effects stress has on your skin.
  2. Get plenty of sleep by going to bed early and keep your bed time regular so your body gets used to it.
  3. Drink plenty of water!!!! #teamhydration
  4. Eat clean healthy foods like fruits, vegetables and good protein (nuts, meat, eggs etc.)
  5. Limit sugar intake - a sneaky slice of chocolate cake to ease your anxiety is tempting but try to resist temptation!
  6. Take long deep breaths through your nose rather than through your mouth. This signals to your body that you are trying to relax so will trick your brain into making you feel calmer.
  7. Do regular exercise e.g. yoga or even just go for a walk. It doesn’t need to be full on, but if running etc. helps you to relax then do it!
  8. Talk to your friends, parents, counsellor or professional to share your stress, they will be happy to help!

Stress can be a destructive beast that requires management and thought. Every now again stop and think, “am I stressed?”

Take care,

The Natural Benefits of White Willow Bark

Who would’ve thought the bark of the White Willow Tree had health benefits for the skin? Well it does! It helps to maintain and enhance beautiful, healthy skin.

White Willow Bark contains Salicin. It is this Salicin that’s believed to be very beneficial to the skin as it is a very gentle, natural exfoliant - a natural exfoliant that’s perfect for sensitive skin. It helps to lift and clear dead skin and environmental impurities, clearing blocked pores, and allowing the bodies own natural oils (sebum) to remain stable. Sub24 has used White Willow Bark in the Cleanser as it helps to give a perfect clean, morning and night.

White Willow Bark is also rich in anti-oxidants similar to those found in green tea. As we all know, anti-oxidants are believed to help feed, rejuvenate, soothe and condition the skin. This is why Sub24 has used it in our moisturiser. It is gentle and very friendly on sensitive skin.

The importance of feeding the largest organ in the body - the skin - with the natural goodness from skincare is so important. Hence why Sub24 has used White Willow Bark, as it helps to feed and clean the skin naturally. Combine that with a good healthy diet of vegetables, fruit, nuts, protein and a little exercise, and you will be well on your way to maintaining glowing skin.

White Willow Bark has many other amazing properties that help rejuvenate and soften the skin. Try our Cleanser and Moisturiser to gain these benefits.

Why does Sub24 Natural Skincare use the herb Horsetail?

Sub24 uses the herb Horsetail to help the skin retain its young, youthful appearance.

Horsetail contains an abundance of Silica. This is a naturally occurring mineral that your body just loves! Horsetail stands out in the cosmetic world, as it is the herb that contains the largest amount of natural Silica in the form that is easily absorbed by the body.

Your body uses Silica in every single structure, your joints, bones, hair, nails and especially the connective tissue that holds the form of your lovely, tight, glowing, young skin.

If there is a break down in the connective tissue in your skin, it can enhance the rate of fine lines and wrinkles. Therefore, the Horsetail in our products prevents and slows this process. In addition, the Silica in Horsetail promotes the production of collagen!

The simple fact that Silica strengthens your skin, helps to reduce pore size, heal irritated skin and helps to retain its natural elasticity, reinforces the importance that skincare should contain Silica and Horsetail.

Horsetail is a very important ingredient in Sub24 Natural Skincare and is found in the Detoxifying Daily Cleanser and Daily Antioxidant Moisturiser.

Be wise and choose natural

How many products do you put on your skin every day?

At Sub24, we simply want you to begin thinking about how many products you put on your body and face each day. If all these products have chemicals in them, think of what is going on your skin.

Therefore, it is paramount that for optimal health and clear skin, you use a natural skincare range like Sub24.

Consider this, your daily, morning routine:
1. You shower using soap or body wash, some may also use body scrub.
2. You shampoo/condition your hair.
3. You may scrub your face.
4. Once out of the shower on goes the body moisturiser/body oil.
5. Young men may shave with shaving foam/gel.
6. You cleanse and moisturise your face.
7. Often makeup is applied.
8. Product is put in your hair.
9. Deodorant is applied.
10. Perfume and after shave maybe applied.

We spend a lot of time thinking about what we should eat, how we should exercise and how to relax to better our health, but there are few who take into real consideration what we put on our skin. Every lotion you put on your skin, the body’s largest organ, absorbs into your body – it’s as simple as that.

If all of these products are full of nasty chemicals, that’s a large amount of bad stuff going into your face and body every single day. Therefore, at Sub24 we believe that it is vital to ensure the products you use contain only the best, natural ingredients. All we want is for you to really start thinking about what you are putting on your skin.

Be smart about your choices in skincare, natural is best.

Remember, at Sub24: “Beauty is being the best possible version of yourself on the inside and out.”

pH Level – Why is it so important in skincare?

At Sub24, when we say that our products are “pH balanced,” it is not just a marketing ploy it is a very important fact.

Your skin, being your largest organ, has a natural ability to fight nasty infections and to protect your skin from harsh environmental pollutants. In order to do this, your skin has cleverly designed a natural barrier called the acid mantle. The acid mantle is made up of sebum (the natural oils that your body produces) and perspiration. These help to keep moisture in, and keep bacteria, toxins and germs out. It is very important that this layer is protected otherwise infections, sensitivity, pimples etc. can occur.

For the acid mantle to function correctly and protect your skin, it needs to be slightly acidic, at a pH of 5-5.5. The pH spectrum runs from 1 (highly acidic) through to 7 being (neutral) and up to 14 (highly alkaline).

If your acid mantle does not sit at this pH level and becomes too alkaline or acidic (which can happen when you use harsh chemicals), you may experience dryness, eczema or sensitivity, hence why you need a skincare range that is pH balanced and natural like Sub24.

Here are our top five tips for protecting your acid mantle and the acidity of your skin:

1. Eat lots of vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains and good oils such as olive oil, remembering that your body is a system so what you put inside it will affect the way you look on the outside.

2. External factors such as the sun, smoking and air pollution can negatively affect your acid mantle, so limit your exposure to these.

3. As you age, your skin naturally changes because you produce less sebum and you have had more exposure to external, environmental factors. Young skin has different needs than older skin so it is important to choose age appropriate skincare. Sub24 has been designed for younger skin and is pH balanced.

4. Excessive, abrasive cleaning of the skin will alter your acid mantle, especially if you are scrubbing with chemical products, often making it too alkaline. Therefore, exfoliating once or twice a week with Sub24 face scrub is perfect as it is not harsh and is pH balanced.

5. Using skincare that is unnatural or not pH balanced will negatively affect your acid mantle, often making it too alkaline. Therefore, avoid chemical products and use natural products like Sub24. Your skin will thank you for it!

As you can see, keeping your diet and skincare clean, simple and pH balanced will get you well on your way to flawless skin.

Remember, at Sub24: “Beauty is being the best possible version of yourself on the inside and out.”
